CELJE AND LOGARSKA VALLEY

CELJE, CELJE CASTLE, ŠEMPETER -ROMAN NECROPOLIS, LOGARSKA VALLEY, RINKA FALLS

HISTORY TOUR WITH NATOUR HIGHLITHS

PROGRAM AND PRICE

Where the Voglajna joins the Savinja River as it turns abruptly south toward the Sava, we find Celje, the third largest city in Slovenia. Its cultural legacy testifies to rich and turbulent centuries. Originally "Keleia", a Celtic settlement where Noricum coins were minted, in the period of Emperor Claudius it developed as "Celeia" into the most important Roman borough and a most important economic and military center.

We will head to Šempeter in the Savinjska Valley and visit the Roman Necropolis, one of Slovenia’s finest archeological sites; over 600 items and more than 100 family tombs were excavated here. After that, we will also explore the nearby Pekel Cave. In winter the inside of the cave is warmer than the outside, and steam can be seen rolling from the cave’s entrance; with some imagination, one can discern an image of the devil above the cave entrance. In the past, that made people afraid of the cave, hence its name – Pekel (meaning Hell).

We will continue towards Logarska Valley, one of Slovenia’s most beautiful Alpine valleys and the winner of the European Destination of Excellence title. After lunch we will continue the panoramic drive along the valley to the 295 ft (90 m) high Rinka Falls. These will astonish us by the mere sight of crystal water, as well as by the fact that it disappears into the gravel underneath the falls and emerges in the middle of Logarska Valley as the Savinja spring. On the way back, we will stop to sample a variety of cheeses at one of the dairy farms.

Graz – Austria’s culinary and cultural capital. A practical tip from the start: If you want to explore Graz, wear comfortable shoes and loose clothing. Why? Even if Graz is actually small – the second-largest city in Austria with a quarter of a million resident by no means a “big city” – you should be prepared for the fact that time also flies in the many short lanes. Comfortable footwear goes easy on busy feet here. In the historic old town with its roads, streets, squares and courtyards there’s lots to explore and even more to be enjoyed, for Graz is also the culinary capital which you should not only see but taste as well.
